Semi-Truck Technology and the Future

Trucking is vital to the nation's economy.  In fact, according to the American Trucking Association, trucks carry nearly 70% of all the freight tonnage transported in the United States each year.

As the country depends on trucks, the semi-truck industry depends on new semi-truck technologies to keep moving forward.  These include ways to make moving the nation's cargo safer, more efficient and more cost-effective.

What are some of these new technologies?

Semi-Autonomous Semi-Trucks

Self-driving semi-trucks are not here yet, but they are on their way.  Until they arrive, the future of semi-trucking will involve semi-autonomous trucks.   Computer software will operate the rig while a human rides along to start the truck, park it and back it up as needed.  With most of the driving automated, the human rider will have time to take care of office-oriented tasks, including customer service, route scheduling and more while traveling down the road.

Self-Parking Semi-Trucks

Before semi-autonomous semi-trucks are common, self-parking semi-trucks will help human drivers accomplish this sometimes tricky task. ZF Innovation Truck has a rig that does just this.  No human touches the steering wheel to park the truck. Instead, a person outside of the rig uses software on a laptop or tablet to guide it through its movements and pivot points.  This smooth, error-free parking increases efficiency by lessening the time it takes to maneuver a semi-truck for loading and unloading its cargo.

360 Degree Technology to Prevent Accidents

This technology lets a semi-truck scan its immediate environment and warn its driver of any hazards, including cars that are too close.  The technology involves cameras, sensors and radar mounted on the truck, letting it constantly scan its immediate vicinity. Volvo has already developed this technology and thinks it could be on the market in just a few years.
